The Quantum Insider, in collaboration with HorizonX Consulting, has launched the Quantum Innovation Index that weighs and compares the level of quantum technology adoption between groups and enterprises across various sectors of the economy.

The innovation index evaluates the largest firms in each major sector of the economy, starting with the automotive sector, to compare their respective levels of quantum adoption in relation to one another, and to distinguish the first-mover companies who are adopting quantum technology at a faster rate than their peers. The index, backed by TQI market intelligence, data and supplementary analysis, focuses on firms’ workforce capabilities, research and development (R&D) investment, and quantum industry partnerships.

The teams created the index to help track the increasing research and development work in quantum, monitor user adoption in this potential $1 trillion market, and reveal best practices in preparation for the approaching quantum era, according to Alex Challans, CEO of Resonance, which operates The Quantum Insider.

“At the heart of this Innovation Index is the idea that the real value of quantum technologies will ultimately accrue primarily to end users as the market rapidly expands,” said Challans. “We believe the Quantum Innovation Index will become a critical tool for tracking the progress and adoption of quantum in key industries. By monitoring key metrics and providing insight into the work being done across the ecosystem, the index offers a clear way to measure how these technologies are maturing and becoming practical for commercial use. This data-driven approach helps ensure that quantum solutions are aligned with the needs of businesses and end users, paving the way for widespread, impactful adoption.”

Assessing Quantum Engagement

The index draws on a combination of proprietary data from The Quantum Insider and publicly accessible sources, offering a comprehensive assessment of each company’s quantum strategies, R&D, adoption and workforce strength.

  • The Quantum Innovation Index’s R&D component integrates multiple sources, including global patent databases, intellectual property platforms, conference contributions, academic journals and preprint servers.
  • Quantum adoption is assessed through metrics on patent activity, proof-of-concept (PoC) initiatives, and collaborations within the quantum technology ecosystem.
  • Workforce strength is measured using The Quantum Insider’s proprietary data on the size and expertise of quantum teams.

Each indicator is weighted according to the relative level of commitment that it demonstrates, contributing to an overall score that reflects a company’s commitment and progress in quantum technology.

“At HorizonX Consulting, we see the Quantum Innovation Index as an invaluable tool for companies navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of quantum technology,” said Steve Suarez, Founder and CEO, HorizonX Consulting. “The insights provided by this index will empower organizations to make informed decisions on their quantum strategies and stay ahead of the curve. At HorizonX Consulting, we don’t just educate boards and executives on the possibilities of quantum – we help craft strategic roadmaps and guide the execution of these plans to ensure organizations fully leverage the potential of quantum technologies. This isn’t a technology you want to lag behind in. Quantum is set to redefine industries, and our goal is to ensure that our clients are leaders, not laggards, in this revolution. With our team by their side, organizations can seize this opportunity to stay at the forefront of innovation.”

Strategic Insights for the Industry

As the automotive industry explores the potential of quantum technology for use-cases such as vehicle routing optimization, materials discovery, and battery development, the Quantum Innovation Index provides a critical benchmark that will allow companies to gauge their standing relative to competitors, identify strategic gaps, and enhance their quantum initiatives accordingly.

Companies and organizations seeking to strengthen their quantum capabilities or contribute additional details to the index are encouraged to engage with The Quantum Insider for more tailored insights.
