China’s General Secretary Reinforces Need for Quantum “Mega-projects”

Xi Jinping reiterated China’s commitment to the development of quantum technology at a recent communist party work session.

Chinese press is reporting that the importance of quantum science has reached the top of the communist party leadership.

Xinhuanet is reporting that Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, has stressed the urgency of advancing the development of quantum science and technology. The leader made the remarks while presiding over a group study session of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Friday, according to Xinhua News Agency.

According to a statement on Teller Report: “If we want to nurture opportunities in crises and open new games amidst changes, we must seek answers from technological innovation. It is necessary to fully understand the importance and urgency of promoting the development of quantum technology, strengthen the strategic planning and system layout of quantum technology development, grasp the general trend, and make good moves.”

The news service does not directly attribute the statement to the general secretary.

Xue Qikun, vice president of Tsinghua University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, presented at the work session on the issue and added comments and suggestions, according to reports.

Teller Report continues: “The development of quantum technology has great scientific significance and strategic value. It is a major disruptive technological innovation that impacts and reconstructs the traditional technological system, and will lead a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation. Chinese scientific and technological workers are catching up in quantum technology and have achieved a number of major innovations with international influence. Generally speaking, our country has already possessed the scientific and technological strength and innovation ability in the field of quantum technology.”

At the same time, we must also realize that there are many shortcomings in the development of quantum technology in my country, and development is facing multiple challenges.

This isn’t the first time that the party has emphasized their question to be a leader in quantum technology.

According to Foreign Affairs, under its 13th five-year plan, introduced in 2016, China has launched a “megaproject” for quantum communications and computing, which aims to achieve major breakthroughs in these technologies by 2030.
