PRESS RELEASES — The National Quantum Initiative (NQI) Supplement to the President’s FY 2024 Budget was released. It is the fourth annual report on the NQI Program, as required by the NQI Act, which became Public Law 115-368 in December 2018 to accelerate American leadership in quantum information science (QIS) and technology.

In line with the National Strategic Overview for QIS, the United States is making substantial and sustained investments in QIS R&D to explore a wide range of applications and nurture a culture of discovery. The United States has invested in fundamental QIS R&D, with core efforts underway in over a dozen agencies. T

The National Quantum Initiative (NQI) Supplement to the President’s FY 2024 Budget was released.

This report recognizes annual highlights of the entire Federal QIS R&D ecosystem and the substantial and sustained efforts funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Defense (DOD), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA). In addition, brief summaries of agency efforts and progress on cross-cutting QIS policy topics are included within the report.

FY 2024 marks a critical juncture for the NQI program as several of the initial authorizations from the NQI Act expire after five years.

In June 2023, the NQI Advisory Committee published its first assessment of the NQI Program and made recommendations for enhancements to the program, and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology held a full hearing on Advancing American Leadership in Quantum Technology. During the hearing, the Committee referenced the NQI Advisory Committee report, which recommended that the NQI Act be reauthorized for at least the next five years.
