Europe’s Quantum Communication Effort

While in Europe the UK leads the way clearly when it comes to startups focused on quantum communications solutions with a dozen or so in business, France and Germany are competing, too.

France’s representatives in this sector include CryptoNext Security, QuRISK and VeriQloud; Germany, on the other hand, can take pride in names like InfiniQuant, QuantiCor Security, QuBalt, and PATERO Inc. — Quantum Secure Communications.

PATERO Inc. — Quantum Secure Communications is an interesting case: founded in 2021 and incorporated in Maryland, US by Henning Schiel and Mirco Jahn as an offshoot of PATERO GmBH, a company established in 2017 specifically for the development and commercialization of a mobile phone with its own built-in proprietary crypto hardware for the encryption of voice and data communication, the startup’s main goal is to build out quantum computer safe communication for critical supply chain, critical infrastructure, IoT EDGE, and defence, preventing scenarios of data loss, ransomware attacks and acts of espionage.

Aware these sorts of intrusions are a clear and present danger, as the data is not protected enough and access to data is unsecured, PATERO’s patent-pending hardware and software quantum secure products are designed to counter such data breaches by promising market-ready solutions, hardware and software VMs, a one-hundred percent interoperable ecosystem that supports new and legacy hardware while seamlessly integrating into existing networks.

“Quantum communication is another milestone in the development of IT infrastructure, not only in science […].”

As to PATERO’s product applications, these incorporate:

• Gateway, Enables Secure Data Flows Between Discrete Networks

• Virtual Cloud Service On Premise, Any Cloud VM and Container

• PCIe and NIC Supports New and Legacy Hardware

• Secure communication Smartphone, Tablet, Laptop

• IoT Sensor Secure Sensor Access Control, Management

• Intelligent Edge LF Edge Interoperable Framework for Edge Computing

All of this would not be possible, however, without the efforts of PATERO’s founders and team, made up of security professionals with backgrounds in government, military and technology.

Henning Schiel is PATERO’s CEO. A former IT Solutions Architect, he has expertise in project management, cloud architecture and solutions, cybersecurity, energy efficiency, and other technical areas.

Although its early days for this type of technology, PATERO’s existence — as well as the others mentioned — is a clear sign there are experts in place to make it happen. Add to that a market of willing customers, and the area of quantum tech can only expand.

“The strongest data encryption technologies used today will be easily defeated after Q Day.”

This quote, from PATERO itself, is something to think about. No threat exists now, but it will. And prevention, as many people say, is better than a cure. In readiness for this, PATERO, InfiniQuant, QuRisk and UK-based ArQit, Crypto Quantique, and KETS Quantum Security — through quantum key distribution (QKD), quantum random number generation (QRNG) or other viable quantum communication approaches —  are preparing for Q Day and its aftermath.
