Ilana Wisby Steps Down as Oxford Quantum Circuits CEO

One of the pioneers of the quantum computing industry — and a leader in building the global quantum ecosystem — announced she is stepping down from her post as CEO.

Ilana Wisby, former CEO of Oxford Quantum Circuits, announced in a LinkedIn post that she left the company. Late last year, OQC announced that SBI Investment, a major Japanese VC fund, would be leading OQC’s $100 million round.

“After the most incredible six years, as we progress with our Series B, it is the right moment to step down and embark on a new journey,” Wisby wrote.

She added that she led OQC from its start as an spin-out from Oxford University.

“With a diverse team built on love and the backing of amazing investors, we’ve achieved so much together,” Wisby writes. “Working with such passionate and world-class colleagues has been an honour, and I’m immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

Wisby was also an important advocate for accessibility and inclusivity in the quantum industry.

In an previous interview with TQI, Wisby discussed the importance of being mindful of quantum’s immense potential.

Wisby said: “Of course, with any new type of technology, it can be used as a force for good or to exert a negative influence on the world. We need to be mindful of that risk from the beginning. We need to look back on history and learn from previous technological revolutions. And we need to agree principles to enable us to make the right, considered choices and take strong stances early on.”

Peter George, Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) chair, said in a news release: “The Board would like to thank Ilana for her dedication to the company and we wish her every success in the next phase of her career.”

Gerald Mullally announced that he has assumed the position of OQC’s interim. Vie LinkedIn, Mullahy writes: “I am excited and honoured to take on the role of CEO on an interim basis. Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) is pushing the frontier of what is possible with quantum, and I look forward to working closely with our brilliant team, investors and partners as we position the company for our next phase of growth!”

Mullally previously served as vice president of the company’s commercial division and previous to his work with OQC, was director of the UK Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet Office.

George, chair, added in the release:  “The board welcomes Gerald to the leadership team and looks forward to working closely with him as OQC strengthens and expands their mission and purpose. Gerald is an exceptional leader who is aligned with OQC’s mission-driven culture, making him well positioned to take on this role.
