High Performance Trapped Ion Quantum Computing

What to expect:
The Quantum Infrastructure team is responsible for designing, building, commissioning, and operating the quantum systems that power our ion trap quantum processors. The team’s scope encompasses various systems and technologies, such as cryogenics, ultrahigh vacuum, superconducting magnets, and narrow linewidth lasers of across the visible and NIR spectrum. They also have extensive knowledge in the installation of crucial components such as PCBs, optical cavities, AOMs, optical fibres, and modulators that are vital for the operation of our quantum systems.

What you’ll be responsible for:
You will be responsible for designing new optical systems such as AOM switchboards, ion imaging systems, and laser stabilisation systems and supporting and training the technician team in assembling, commissioning and maintaining our quantum computers. The role also involves specifying and designing new quantum systems to meet broader science and technical objectives and leading the assembly and commissioning of these systems. You will work across the business to deliver the quantum systems and with technicians to assemble and test and bring new systems online, help trap the first ions in new systems and improve the reliability of existing systems.

The role also involves debugging issues with existing quantum systems and specifying optical systems to meet science requirements. Additionally, you will work collaboratively to implement these designs and support technicians and engineers to carry out routine maintenance of optical systems, as well as ion trap replacement operations. Commissioning new systems such as trap beam alignment, working with electrical engineering on in-situ PCB testing, trapping ions in new systems, configuring and debugging control system problems, gathering specs, and designing new systems to meet science goals are other responsibilities of the role.

What you’ll need:
You will need experience designing and aligning free space optical systems, along with experience working with lasers. Desirable skills include experience in experimental atomic/AMO/ion trapping systems and designing and building atomic physics experiments.

Additionally, experience working with UHV, diode lasers, laser stabilisation, and cryogenics is desired. Proficiency in Zemax for optical design, programming skills in Python and Artiq, and knowledge of mechanical design and CAD are also desirable. Knowledge of electronics is a plus.
